I love to write: whether it be a creative piece of editorial, a well-researched article, a lengthy essay, a catchy press release or small piece of website text. The main thing is that I like to be clear and engaging and to get to the point!
Features writing
I am a features writer and interviewer, specialising in the arts, law, media, politics and education. These specialisations grew out of my studies in law, politics, media, music and dance; my interest and family heritage in the performing arts; and my experience working within the education and legal sectors. I am also a dance and film reviewer. I am a trained musician, flautist and singer. I have strong research and interview skills, and I thoroughly enjoy engaging with people on subjects about which I am passionate.
Editing
My editing experience incorporates structural and content editing, sub-editing, as well as magazine/newsletter editing (i.e. developing themes, art direction, proofing, production and content.) My background, in particular my former career as a lawyer, has provided me with skills in synthetising large amounts of information into digestible pieces. I understand the need for clarity and consistency, and I am very thorough. I have excellent research skills. I can produce, implement or advise on editorial style guides. I am the former editor of Keynote magazine at La Trobe University and the Young Lawyers' Journal (Law Institute of Victoria.)
Corporate writing
Copy (text) needs to be well-researched, well-structured and targeted to the relevant audience. It also needs to be written in a style that is relevant to the particular medium and consistent with other related materials. Many people either don't enjoy writing or simply don't have the time to invest in it. Some organisations simply prefer to outsource their writing and editing requirements on a project basis. That's where I can help.
My corporate writing experience spans corporate features, research papers, interviews, essays and editorial on a range of topics, training materials and reports, as well as the spectrum of marketing communications, including:
~ advertising, branding, direct mail, expo stands and press releases/kits,
~ annual reports, brochures, magazines, newsletters and presentations, and
~ multimedia presentations and website content.
I have valuable experience working in marketing communications, as both a freelancer and employee, and I have also consulted for larger marketing agencies. My studies in online writing and navigation, and my work as a website producer, mean that I understand the difference between writing for both print and online environments. I also appreciate the need to combine both strategic and creative goals, and to marry text, branding and design. (For information on marketing communications project management and production, please visit the communications section of this site.) My press releases have a high uptake rate. I grasp the brief quickly and have a friendly interview technique.
My experience spans a range of industry sectors include: education, financial services, government, interiors, I.T., media, professional services (business consulting, legal, tax, and medical), procurement, retail, science and technology, and travel, as well as strategic content services for the clients of larger marketing consultancies.
